Mike Piazza hopes to advise Yoenis Cespedes at Mets camp

PORT ST. LUCIE — Mike Piazza clearly noticed the car show that Yoenis Cespedes was putting on at Mets camp last week. The Hall of Fame catcher came in Sunday and offered some advice for the Mets’ slugger.

“I don’t care what you drive as long as you drive in runs,” the former Mets slugger said he was going to tell Cespedes.

In camp as a special instructor, Piazza briefly met Cespedes Sunday morning before going to work with the catchers, but he is looking forward to his chance to really talk with the Cuban slugger. As a big bat who came to the Mets in a deadline trade and ended up staying, Piazza has some insight and advice for him.

“There is going to be a lot of pressure on him this year,” said Piazza, who came to the Mets in a trade in 1998 and ended up staying seven more years. “He’s going to be expected to do a lot and I have a little experience knowing that pressure.

“I hope he’s able to discipline himself and really find his strike zone and realize that when the pitchers are not pitching to him, he’s got to take his walks,” Piazza said.

A Met official, when told what Piazza said, smiled, nodded and said that has been a message Cespedes has been getting constantly.

Last season, between the Tigers and Mets, Cespedes drew 33 walks and struck out 141 times in 633 regular season at-bats. His unwillingness to take a walk became even more apparent in the playoffs when he walked once — intentionally — in 56 at-bats.

“He just got too anxious and tried to do too much,” Piazza said of Cespedes, who hit .150 as the Mets lost in five games to the Royals in the World Series. “He was just swinging trying to hit the ball out of the stadium. I will tell him look you don’t have to the ball out of the stadium. You just have to hit it over the wall or off the wall. “

Piazza said he thinks Cespedes will figure out the balance of playing under the pressure of being the Mets big star.

“I think he’s going to be fine. I think he is so talented. The key is for him not to try to do too much when he is expected to do so much,” Piazza said. “If he gets a hit and a walk in a game, that’s .333. That’s the way I looked at the game. Sometimes you have to take your walks and let the guys around you do their job.”

And after watching the Mets run to the World Series last fall, Piazza thinks they definitely have the talent around Cespedes to be dangerous this season. As a catcher, he marvels at the rotation of young, power arms they are putting out there day after day.

“It’s like driving a different sports car everyday,” Piazza said. “A Ferrari next to a Porsche,”

Piazza, who will go into Cooperstown this summer, said he is getting used to the idea that he is now Hall of Famer. He said it was “so special,” to be joining Tom Seaver as the only two players in the Hall as Mets.

” Obviously being from this organization to be along side him in the Hall as a Met is so special,” Piazza said.

The connection he made with the city and the Mets fans during his time at Shea makes going into the Hall as Met perfect. He hopes these young Mets realize the opportunity they have in the city.

“Enjoy it, enjoy the energy of the city, enjoy being in new York City,” Piazza said he would tell these young players. “Enjoy playing and having the attention here, but also to realize you have to get your job done first.

“If you can execute there, these people will embrace you and will be able to enjoy all the fruits and benefits of being here,” Piazza continued. “But you have to execute first.”
