Mets Insider: Lagares shows he can be center of attention

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Juan Lagares’ presumed reclaiming of the Mets’ starting center field job didn’t last long once they re-signed Yoenis Cespedes in January.

But Lagares has impressed the organization by coming into camp in top shape this spring, and the 2014 Gold Glove winner returned from a three-day absence due to a dental issue to reach base three times and knock in two runs Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to the Braves.

“It starts out with the way he came into spring training,” Terry Collins said after the game. “You saw it, he walked in and was in tremendous shape.

It’s a tribute to him the way he’s gone about things and he’s had a good spring. He’s bound and determined to show us that he belongs back in the lineup.”

With left-handed hitters Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson slated to man the corner outfield spots, Lagares still should earn some starts against lefty pitching as the team’s fourth outfielder. He had two singles, a walk and a stolen base on Tuesday, including a two-run single to left in the fourth inning.

Outfielder Roger Bernadina, a late arrival to camp due to visa issues, made his first start in right field and went 1-for-2 with a walk.
