Carmelo Anthony’s 30 points, and last second shot, aren’t enough to save Knicks.

BOSTON – Carmelo Anthony didn’t have to apologize for anything on Friday but the ending for him as well as the Knicks was sorry to say the least.

The Knicks blew an eight-point lead in the final 3:23 and lost 105-104 to the Celtics when Anthony’s three-pointer at the buzzer sailed long.

Anthony finished with 30 points on 13-for-27 shooting and gave the Knicks the lead with 21 seconds left after hitting a turnaround jumper. However, Avery Bradley answered with a lay-up, leaving the Knicks with 17 seconds to play with. Boston had a foul to give and did do with 3.3 seconds remaining. The Knicks had used their timeouts and had to settle for a long three from Anthony.

The loss was the Knicks’ 16th in their last 19 games and dropped them to 25-38 overall. Boston improved to 38-25.

Arron Afflalo added 17, Kristaps Porzingis 15, Jose Calderon 13 and Robin Lopez had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Isaiah Thomas led the Celtics with 32 points. Jae Crowder added 20 and Evan Turner scored 21 off the bench.

Anthony had 24 points after three quarters and began the fourth on the bench with the Knicks leading 87-81. Anthony returned with 9:37 left and the Celtics trailing by four and after Boston failed on three possessions to draw to within two, Anthony hit a pull-up over Jonas Jerebko.

Langston Galloway’s lay-up with 4:16 remaining gave the Knicks a 100-92 lead. But Boston scored the game’s next seven points including Crowder’s lay-up with 1:32 left. Anthony pushed the lead back to three when his jumper from the left of the key hit the rim and backboard before bouncing in with 1:19 to play.

Thomas penetrated the lane and set up Jared Sullinger for an easy lay-up. The Knicks elected not to call timeout and the result was Lopez misfiring on a jump hook. He appeared to be fouled but with no call made Evan Turner pushed the ball and hit a jumper with 36.4 second left.

The Celtics finally had the lead but it didn’t last long. With Anthony isolated on Crowder in the post, he calmly sank a turnaround jumper with 21.4 seconds left.

The Celtics called timeout and went for a quick strike; Bradley attacking the basket and getting a lay-up. The Knicks looed momentarily stunned. Without a timeout to call, Anthony began dribbling up court with Crowder guarding him. Crowder wisely fouled with 3.3 seconds left and allowed Boston to set up its defense.

This time, Marcus Smart was guarding Anthony, who took one dribble and launched a poor shot that wasn’t close.

This has been a rough week for Anthony. On Sunday, former teammate Amar’e Stoudemire insinuated that Anthony was responsible for helping run Jeremy Lin out of New York. Two nights later, Anthony had an exchange with a heckler that resulted in an awkward apology that he admitted wasn’t his idea.

Mostly, Anthony is frustrated by the Knicks play. They were 22-22 before the wheels came off their season.

“It’s harder from a standpoint that we were playing good basketball early in the season,” Anthony said. “Even up until last month we were playing good basketball. It just switched all of the sudden so we’ve got to find a way to get that back for the last month and a half.”

He’s having a hard time accepting the fact that the Knicks will likely finish with a third straight season with a losing record and without a playoff appearance.

“It’s hard to say I’m just going to accept this,” he said. “It’s hard to do this, especially when you still have games to play, when you’re still in it, when you’re still trying to figure out ways to win basketball games. So it’s hard to accept that.”
