CALIFORNIA CHROME may be the headline act in Saturday’s Dubai World Cup, but there is more than one American hope in the £6.8 million contest with Frosted appearing the main danger to the fairytale story.

Kiaran McLaughlin believes his Grade 1 scorer, who is partnered by last year’s winning rider William Buick, is “doing everything right” ahead of the main event at Meydan.

While California Chrome heads the market at 6-4, Frosted is next best at 5-2, with the market suggesting the race will fall to one of the pair.

McLaughlin, 55, celebrated World Cup success in 2007 with Invasor and hopes to provide Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation a seventh World Cup victory.

In an interview for Saturday’s Racing Post, the trainer said: “California Chrome is going to be tough to beat and Todd Pletcher [Mshawish] and Bob Baffert [Hoppertunity] don’t bring horses here just for the run. But Frosted is doing everything right and ran a very strong race here. If he repeats that I think he can win.”

Away from the pace

With lower numbers available, McLaughlin surprisingly opted for stall nine in the pre-race draw, feeling it would be best to race wide of the early speed.

McLaughlin added: “We drew outside on purpose as we wanted to be outside the speed. But while we are outside two of the speed horses we have California Chrome wide of us and we don’t know what he’s going to do. It’s not that we were concerned about kickback, because he takes kickback well, and I’m not worried about a bias as I think the track is very fair.”
