McCann loves Yankees rotation, despite many question marks

The Yankees’ rotation has plenty of question marks heading into 2016. According to Brian McCann, that simply makes the Bombers like every other team in baseball.

The catcher might be simplifying things a bit, as four of the five projected starting pitchers have something to prove this season. But given the state of pitching around the majors, McCann believes the Yankees’ rotation should give them a good chance to capture their first American League East title since 2012.

“I love our staff; I feel like a lot of people are sleeping on it,” McCann said. “If you look at it, every night we’re running out a good arm. We’ve got some guys like Bryan Mitchell who hopefully takes that next step. I like where we’re at.”

Masahiro Tanaka is coming back from October surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow – the same hinge that still houses a partially torn ligament.

CC Sabathia — who spent a month in rehab for alcohol addition in October — continues to battle a degenerative knee condition, though he believes a knee brace he began wearing late last season should help him pitch through the knee problem.

Nathan Eovaldi is returning from an elbow injury that cost him the final month of the 2015 season, while Michael Pineda hasn’t put together a complete healthy season since his rookie year in 2011.

With all of these uncertainties, is McCann concerned about the rotation’s ability to answer the bell every night?

“I think every team can say that,” McCann said. “You never know when an injury is going to occur; for me I don’t even look at it that way. CC’s got the knee brace, but there’s no one that works harder and has that mindset that he has. He’s got the mindset of a No. 1, of what he’s done his whole career. Then we hand the ball off to Tanaka; he had the bone chips taken out and we’ll see how he responds. Eovaldi took huge steps last year and reports are he’s throwing the ball real good. We’ve got arms.”

The only starter without a health issue is Luis Severino, who was impressive during his two-month debut last year. Although there are no physical issues to worry about, Severino — who turns 22 on Feb. 20 — threw a career-high 161.2 innings in 2015, meaning he’s unlikely to reach 200 frames in his sophomore campaign.

“He learned a lot last year, what it takes to succeed at this level,” McCann said. “He’s going to go into this offseason and learn even more, go into the season and get better and better.”

The rotation might have some question marks, but the addition of Aroldis Chapman to the dynamic duo of Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller gives the Yankees the best bullpen in the game, alleviating some of the pressure from the starters over the course of the lengthy season.

“That’s kind of where the game is going,” McCann said. “You’re playing a lot of close games, a lot of one-run games where one pitch can cost you the game more so now than six, seven or eight years ago.

“The games are all close nowadays, so that’s where teams are going; they realize that back ends of bullpens win championships. Your starter can go out and give you 100 pitches in five innings and hand the ball over. You’re seeing a lot of teams have success that way.”
