‘England still trying to find right XI’

Angelo Mathews passed a late fitness test and took his place in the Sri Lanka side for the second Royal London ODI against England at a sold-out Edgbaston.

Mathews suffered a recurrence of a hamstring strain during the first ODI and was forced off the field. But after some gentle running yesterday, he had a slightly more rigorous fitness test an hour or two ahead of the game and has declared himself fit. It is unclear whether he will be able to bowl his full allocation of overs.

Mathews also won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch that should produce another high-scoring encounter despite poor weather in the region over the last couple of weeks.

Sri Lanka have made one change to their side, with offspinner Suraj Randiv coming into the side in place of seam-bowling allrounder, Dasun Shanaka.

England have named an unchanged side for the game. The tie in the first match of the series means they have not won in four ODIs – they lost the last three of the series against South Africa – but if they do win today, they will have an unassailable lead in the Super Series. They currently lead 11-3.

It was at Edgbaston, just over a year ago, that England’s limited-overs revolution began. They thrashed 408 in the first ODI against New Zealand; the first time they had made 400 in an ODI. Eoin Morgan confirmed that he, too, would have chosen to bat first.

This pitch may not prove quite so amenable for batsmen, though. The groundstaff have been obliged to work 17-hour days to help drain the outfield over the last week, with only four rain-free days in the last 14.

England 1 Jason Roy, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 David Willey, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Adil Rashid.

Sri Lanka 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Danushka Gunathilaka, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Upul Tharanga, 7 Seekkuge Prasanna, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Suraj Randiv,10 Nuwan Pradeep, 11 Suranga Lakmal
