PYROMANIAC was banned from racing for 42 days and trainer Tony Martin fined €2,000 as the Killarney stewards took a dim view of the six-year-old’s run at Killarney on Tuesday evening.

Sent off the 4-1 second-favourite for a 1m6f race won by Hidden Cyclone, Pyromaniac finished sixth of the eight runners to complete, beaten nine lengths.

However the stewards found Martin and jockey Patrick McGuigan in breach of Rule 212, in that Martin had used the racecourse as a training ground, while McGuigan had made insufficient effort to achieve the best possible position.

Inquiry details

McGuigan told the stewards he was instructed to jump his mount off and give him cover, let him travel and creep away until entering the straight where he was to do his best.

He confirmed that he rode as instructed until his mount began to hang around the bottom bend and hung further to the left in the straight to the extent that his mount got unbalanced which in his opinion affected his overall performance.

However McGuigan failed to notify the stewards that Pyromaniac was hanging until the inquiry took place, which he is obliged to do under Rule 213.

Martin expressed his satisfaction with McGuigan’s ride until the final stages, where he felt the horse needed to be given a few strong hits down the shoulder to pull him together and get him to straighten.

McGuigan was given a seven-day ban, while Pyromaniac’s 42-day ban would rule him out of running at the Galway festival later this month.
