Man Utd 'wait and see' on Rooney injury

Wayne Rooney

Wane Rooney has scored seven goals in his past nine games

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he must “wait and see” how long captain Wayne Rooney will be sidelined with a knee injury.

It is thought Rooney, 30, will miss about six weeks but Van Gaal did not put a timescale on his recovery in a news conference on Wednesday.

“We have 13 players injured and Wayne is one of them,” said the Dutchman.

England captain Rooney had already been ruled out of Thursday’s Europa League match against FC Midtjylland.

Van Gaal added: “He scores a lot of goals so he is very important for us. We know that but we have to cope.”

A six-week absence would keep Rooney out until early April, meaning he could miss eight United games and two England friendlies.

His participation in Euro 2016, which begins on 10 June, is not thought to be in doubt.

But the injury continues a sequence of Rooney’s preparations for major tournaments being hampered.

Prior to the 2006 World Cup, Rooney broke a metatarsal, and four years later he struggled with an ankle injury before the tournament in South Africa.

He was banned for the first two matches of Euro 2012 after being sent off in England’s final qualifier.
