Suresh Raina, the Gujarat Lions captain, returned from paternity leave and chose to bowl against Kolkata Knight Riders in the first T20 match in Kanpur. “Day-night games have not been played here. And our batting has been good,” Raina reasoned.

Lions made three changes to the side that lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday. Left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati, wicketkeeper-batsman Eklavya Dwivedi and Raina came in for Akshdeep Nath, Pravin Tambe and chinaman bowler Shivil Kaushik.

Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir said he too would have bowled first. Knight Riders were forced to make a change due to Andre Russell’s leg injury. West Indies allrounder Jason Holder replaced him.

Knight Riders will book a spot in the playoffs if they win. Lions are currently fifth in the points table with seven wins in 12 matches. Their net run-rate is -0.747 and may need to win both their remaining games to go through to the playoffs.
