DESPITE connections’ concerns over the rain-softened ground, Limato was among 13 declared runners for the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes, the first older-horse Group 1 of the year in Britain, revealed on Thursday.

Newbury reported over 16mm of rain in the 24 hours up to Thursday morning, leaving the official description of the course as soft, heavy in places with a GoingStick reading of 4.9.

Limato has only ever run on good or good to firm going and connections had been hoping for less testing conditions for what would be his first run over a mile.

Among Limato’s rivals on Saturday will be four in the Godolphin colours: Belardo, Dutch Connection, last year’s runner-up Toormore and likely pacemaker Barchan.

Bear can do it in the mud

Presumably welcoming the rain will be connections of Kodi Bear, who looked a Group 1 prospect when winning the Celebration Mile impressively last year on soft ground but came unstuck on British Champions Day.

He, along with Toormore, has been projected to pose the main threat to Limato.

The two major absentees at the final declaration stage were Amazing Maria and Estidhkaar. The former won two Group 1s against her own sex last year. Also absent from the final list were Adaay, Cougar Mountain and Home Of The Brave.

Amazing Maria’s withdrawal means that the only female left in the race is Euro Charline, runner-up in the Dubai Turf when last seen.
