CONNECTIONS of St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase fancy Oscar Barton have been forced to retire the 11-year-old.

Last seen under rules beating On The Fringe by 19 lengths in a hunter chase at Down Royal in December 2014, Oscar Barton followed that up with a 20-length success between the flags a year ago, but missed  Cheltenham through injury.

Trainer Gordon Elliott was sweet on his chances next month, only to concede defeat on Thursday.

“He’s going to be retired as he has suffered the same injury which kept him out last year,” the trainer said. “He had a big engine and it’s a shame.”

Oscar Barton won five times in points and three times at the track and was as low as 7-1 for the Foxhunter.

Last month another leading contender for the race was retired when the Willie Mullins-trained Prince De Beauchene bowed out at the age of 13.
