Tom Latham held together New Zealand’s first session as they ate away at Zimbabwe’s first-innings total with careful, considered scoring. The run-rate remained under three to the over in a slow but ideal session for New Zealand to set themselves up for a lead.

Zimbabwe’s sole success was capturing the wicket of Martin Guptill, a welcome break from being under the pump in every other way. The hosts took the field on the second day without wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva and allrounder Sean Williams, who both took ill overnight. Brian Chari, not known for his glovework, had to take over behind the stumps, while Williams’ absence left them a bowler short.

With the ball just 10 overs old overnight, Graeme Cremer chose to start with his two quicks. Donald Tiripano and Michael Chinouya bowled spells of four and six overs respectively, but rarely troubled New Zealand’s openers. Both were guilty of being too predictable in line and length, sending down delivery after delivery, full and outside off stump – a decent strategy for limiting run-scoring, but only for a while.

Guptill and Latham were comfortable, albeit circumspect, on the drive and they added 43 runs in the first hour of play, by which time Cremer had made some changes. He brought himself on to see if there was any turn he could exploit and asked Chamu Chibhabha to take over from Tiripano. But a spread field suggested he was moving to defence mode.

However, Chibhabha’s medium-pace proved pesky for Guptill, especially as he found some shape away. He cramped Guptill for room several times and then drew him forward to force a drive. A thick edge carried to Craig Ervine at gully.

Latham and Kane Williamson consolidated at the fall of the wicket, allowing Zimbabwe to string two maiden overs together for the first time in the innings, but the pair had grown confident by the end of the session. The 100 came up five minutes before lunch and, with New Zealand starting to speed up, Zimbabwe could face a long day unless their attack conjures up something special.
