The combination of injuries and a losing season have hurt Kristaps Porzingis’ Rookie of the Year chances over the last month.

DENVER – There was a time, not too long ago, when Kristaps Porzingis was in a neck-and-neck race for the Rookie of the Year award.

But as the Knicks’ season collapsed under losing and a coaching change, Porzingis’ production took a dip and he fell behind Karl-Anthony Towns among rookie performers.

On Monday – after he was limited in practice because of a lower leg contusion – Porzingis outlined the one scenario where he could still win Rookie of the Year. It’s a longshot.

“It will be tough because Karl is playing unbelievably,” he said. “The only option for me is for us to make the playoffs.”

Porzingis, who missed Saturday’s victory over the Pistons, said he expects to play Tuesday in Denver, where the Knicks (26-38) begin a six-game road trip. He explained why his rebounding numbers have fallen since Kurt Rambis took over as interim coach.

“Teams are paying a little bit more attention to my offensive rebounding. Another reason is that the level is higher just because teams are competing more,” he said. “There are more guys going for offensive rebounds so I’m worrying more about boxing my guy out and not just grabbing the rebound. The first part of the season I would rebound, I was wide open. Nobody was there. I’d just take it.”

For the first time this season, Porzingis didn’t win the Eastern Conference’s Rookie of the Month award when it was announced for January. The honor went to Indiana’s Myles Turner, while Towns continued his sweep of the Western Conference award.
