The rumors linking Joe Philbin to the Giants prove unfounded.

So Joe Philbin isn’t joining the Giants after all.

On Friday, the former Miami Dolphins head coach, who most expected would join the Giants as an assistant head coach to newly hired head man Ben McAdoo, signed on to serve as Indianapolis Colts offensive line coach. The Colts announced the move.

The move came as a surprise. On Wednesday night, as McAdoo was finalizing his deal, sources indicated that Philbin, who had teamed with McAdoo under Mike McCarthy in Green Bay, would join him.

The Giants never confirmed the move, though, and McAdoo seemed surprised when Philbin was mentioned as a potential assistant on Friday.

“He’s coming?” McAdoo said. “I think he’s a talented man, talented coach, one of the best I’ve been around. But like I said the staff is fluid.”

McAdoo repeated that his coaching staff is “fluid” several times on Friday, and Philbin’s hiring in Indy only serves to reinforce that.

“There’s a lot of good coaches around the league,” McAdoo said, “and we are going to sit down and talk to some different people and not rush into anything and take our time.”
