Jets sign nose tackle McLendon to three-year, $12M deal

The Jets have found Damon Harrison’s replacement.

Gang Green is signing former Steelers nose tackle Steve McLendon to a three-year, $12 million deal that includes $4 million in guarantees, according a source.

McLendon, 30, figures to be a starter with Harrison having bolted to the Giants earlier in free agency. He started 10 games for the Steelers last season. He’s the second starter, along with Matt Forte, that the Jets have signed in free agency. He joins Jarvis Jenkins, a backup defensive end as the second defensive lineman to agree to terms with the Jets on Wednesday.

McLendon, who attended Troy University, originally signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2009, but first appeared in a game for them in 2010.

After signing McLendon, the Jets are going to need to open up some cap space. The team entered Wednesday with $2.28 million remaining cap room, according to overthecap.com. In order to stay under the cap, the Jets are going to have to make some adjustments. They could cut D’Brickashaw Ferguson, for example, or try to get to him to take a pay cut. Alternatively, they could restructure deals by shifting 2016 salary into signing bonus for players like Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall or Buster Skrine. No matter what, it’s going to be a tight squeeze for the Jets this year.
