Jets GM Mike Maccagnan wants to bring back Ryan Fitzpatrick

There remains a huge difference in terms for a contract between Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets.

Even though contract negotiations have stalled, the Jets still hope Ryan Fitzpatrick ends up being their starting quarterback.

“Our goal eventually is ultimately to get Ryan under contract and go forward,” Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said on conference call Friday.

Many expected Fitzpatrick and the Jets to reach an easy resolution, but after a week-and-a-half of free agency, the team and quarterback remain in a standoff over compensation.

Maccagnan admitted that the team has “contingency plans” at quarterback. However, the GM noted, “our focus primarily is to try and get something worked out with Ryan.”

There is believed to be a Grand Canyon-sized difference between the two sides, perhaps somewhere in the ballpark of $7 million annually. While the Fitzpatrick camp knows he is the Jets’ priority, there doesn’t appear to be another team willing to outbid the Jets for the veteran quarterback at this point.

“Eventually, hopefully, we find a middle ground at some point,” Maccagnan said.

As for those contingency plans? Maccagnan wouldn’t reveal what those are and played down a visit by free agent QB Robert Griffin III earlier in free agency.

“It was more of a meet-and-greet type situation with him,” Maccagnan said of Griffin’s visit.

But one backup plan that Maccagnan did recognize as a possibility was Geno Smith, who remains on the team despite having fallen out of favor with the fan base.

“With Geno, we haven’t really had him as a starter for us, but he would definitely be a possibility to step in to that role,” Maccagnan said.

The GM noted that Smith was actually ahead of Fitzpatrick on the depth chart entering training camp. Smith’s season was wrecked when IK Enemkpali punched him in the locker room during training camp, thus making Fitzpatrick the starter.

“He never really had a chance to…compete for the job, so he’s a bit of an unknown really,” Maccagnan said.

That punch to the jaw by Enemkpali ended up being a blessing in disguise for both the Jets and Fitzpatrick. The journeyman QB had the best season of his career, throwing for 3,905 yards, 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He helped the Jets get to 10 wins, though the team fell short of the playoffs after losing to the Bills in Week 17.

Though most have been surprised that it’s been so difficult for the Jets and Fitzpatrick to reach an agreement thus far in free agency, Maccagnan said he wasn’t shocked by how the process has gone.

“I mean, it’s free agency….And again, I think both parties are basically trying to look (for) basically what they feel is fair,” he said. “We like Ryan. We’d like to have Ryan back.”
