Japan: Horse of the Year Maurice will return to action in the Champions Mile at Sha Tin on May 1 when he will be ridden by Joao Moreira, while Hong Kong Cup winner A Shin Hikari is on course for Royal Ascot.

Maurice established himself as one of the world’s leading milers last year, but has not raced since winning the Hong Kong Mile under Ryan Moore in December.

He was due to run in the Dubai Turf at Meydan on Saturday, but suffered a slight setback.

Jockey switch

Connections are now planning a return to Hong Kong and Moreira, available to ride as Able Friend is injured, will be on board, taking over from Moore who will be on Classic duty in Britain in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas on May 1.

Japan will also be represented in Sha Tin’s Group 1 a week earlier when Lovely Day and Nuovo Record, who was second to A Shin Hikari in the Hong Kong Cup, contest the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup.

They will prep for the race in the Grade 2 Osaka Hai at Hanshin on April 3 and Yasutoshi Ikee, who trains Lovely Day, last seen finishing fifth in the Arima Kinen in December, said: “It took him time to get over that, but he’s fine now and moving well.”

A Shin Hikari’s trainer Masanori Sakaguchi will not have the son of Deep Impact ready for the QEII Cup so connections have turned their attention to Europe.

The five-year-old is set to run in the Prix d’Ispahan, which will be a prep for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
