Report: Leopardstown, Saturday

GAIN Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m, 4yo

THE Ivanovich Gorbatov bubble burst spectacularly at Leopardstown as the Triumph Hurdle favourite was well beaten by the Willie Mullins third string Footpad (14-1) who led home a stable 1-2-3.

The Mullins trio came home in reverse order, with 10-1 shot Allblak Des Places two and three-quarter lengths behind and a nose to the good against the Ruby Walsh-ridden 5-1 chance Let’s Dance.

Ivanovich Gorbatov, sent off the 8-13 favourite, was comfortably held in fourth, a further seven lengths adrift under Barry Geraghty.

Mullins said: “Danny [Mullins, rider] took matters into his own hands. I wanted him to be closer but he felt they were going very fast and he settled him behind which was a good decision. He got him settled and jumping because he really jumped too big here at Christmas and was very free. The hood today was a help.

“That performance was what we thought he was capable of when we saw him at Auteuil last year. He looked a fair sort and hopefully we can go on from here.”

Triumph shake-up

Footpad is now contesting favouritsm for the JCB-sponsored Cheltenham Grade 1 and is as short as 8-1 in some books and a best-priced 12-1 with Ladbrokes.

He further strengthens the hand of owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, who owned the first two home in last year’s renewal and already have Sceau Royal at 8-1 and 10-1 shot Fixe Le Kap prominent in the betting for next month.

Walsh led the field along at a strong enough tempo given the testing conditions and turning for home looked to have all his rivals at it on the filly, but as her stamina faded her stablemates came through to fight out the finish – with Footpad powering clear under Danny Mullins.

Ivanovich Gorbatov had been heavily supported for the Triumph Hurdle in the wake of his maiden win over Let’s Dance last month and was as short as 5-2 on Saturday morning, and while he remains joint-favourite he is a best-priced 8-1 for the opening race on day four of the festival.

Let’s Dance is a 14-1 chance for the Triumph, while she remains 10-1 for the Mares’ Novice Hurdle with Sky Bet.

Mullins added: “I thought our other two ran crackers. Let’s Dance was staying on again at the finish after doing all the hard work, I think she will have learned an awful lot today. Allblek Des Places ran a cracker too and I’ll be keen to go to the Triumph Hurdle with all three.”

The Paul Nicholls-trained Connetable, who downed last year’s Triumph winner Peace And Co at Sandown, has also been cut for the race, with his price now ranging from 6-1 to 16-1 with Coral.
