India caught West Indies totally unawares on the fifth morning with almost street-cricket running to negate the slow outfield, bat West Indies out of the game quickly and give themselves 87 possible overs to bowl West Indies out for what could be a series-sealing win. The target of 346 was academic, especially given the slow outfield.

In the nine overs that India batted on day five, meant to accommodate 98 to make up for the rain on day three, they stole 60 runs from almost literally under West Indies’ noses. By scoring those quick runs, India gave themselves a burst with the second new ball should they need it.

Miguel Cummins, who went 280 balls in Test cricket without a wicket, was in luck and ended up with six wickets as the batsmen went after quick runs. Both sides would hope the umpires exhausted their quota of mistakes: neither Rohit Sharma (lbw off an inside edge) nor Wriddhiman Saha (caught behind off a no-ball) should have been given out.

The star for India yet again was Ajinkya Rahane who burnt his lungs to eke out every possible run; on one occasion he snuck in a single when Ravindra Jadeja glided a ball straight to slip. On quite a few India stole the second with the ball in the hand of the fielders, and a third with the panicked overthrow. Now awake to India’s strategy of just running everything – which is why R Ashwin was demoted – West Indies played into their hands by employing deep fields, poor backing up and hardly any attempt by bowlers to collect throws.
