India made all the positive moves on the first morning of the series, winning their fifth straight toss, choosing to bat first and unveiling a side with five specialist bowlers. On a flat pitch that was expected to test the batsmen only on the first morning, Virat Kohli had no hesitation facing that session in order to put the runs on the board and try to take 20 wickets. West Indies’ selection betrayed an opposite mindset: only three specialist bowlers with other allrounders to share the bowling duties.

India’s choice of the five specialist bowlers was aggressive too. Umesh Yadav was the fifth bowler ahead of a safer pick of Stuart Binny, who can bat a bit, and the selection of Amit Mishra showed they resisted the temptation of playing Ravindra Jadeja, a better batsman than Mishra. Mohammed Shami made his Test comeback a year-and-a-half after he last played, in Sydney. Shikhar Dhawan, who was under pressure when India last played a Test, more than six months ago, got the nod ahead of KL Rahul, as was expected.

West Indies too last played a Test almost six months ago, and while India made only one change from their last XI, West Indies made a host of changes. Rajendra Chandrika came back for his fourth Test, wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich made his debut, and Shanon Gabriel and Devendra Bishoo made comebacks. Roston Chase, offspinning allrounder, was handed a debut too.

India 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 M Vijay, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt.), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 7 R Ashwin, 8 Amit Mishra, 9 Ishant Sharma, 11 Mohammed Shami, 11 Umesh Yadav

West Indies 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 Rajendra Chandrika, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Jermaine Blackwood, 6 Roston Chase, 7 Carlos Brathwaite, 8 Shane Dowrich (wk), 9 Jason Holder (capt.), 9 Shanon Gabriel, 11 Devendra Bishoo
