Harvey had blood clot in bladder, will start Opening Day

PORT ST. LUCIE — What a relief.

After hours of speculation about his “mysterious” medical condition, Matt Harvey was cleared to pitch Opening Day after passing a “big” blood clot. The Mets ace said that the blood clot developed after a bladder infection, likely because he does not use the restroom often enough.

“I guess the main issue is I hold my urine in for too long instead of peeing regularly, so I guess I have to retrain my bladder to use the restroom a little bit more instead of holding it in,” a tired and pale Harvey said Tuesday morning. “I guess that’s what caused the bladder infection.

“It started two days ago and through the night it was pretty painful, and (I) finally passed the blood clot,” Harvey added. “They went in and checked it out today and everything was fine.”

Harvey and Mets manager Terry Collins confirmed that the righthander will start Sunday night’s season opener in Kansas City, but that the last few days were scary with high concern for Harvey’s health.

“For me, yeah, I didn’t really know what was going on. I was having trouble using the restroom and obviously any time there’s discoloration in your urine, it’s not a great feeling,” Harvey said. “So I didn’t know what was going on with my stomach, but we had some tests yesterday and everything is fine now.”

Collins, who grew frustrated with having to deflect questions about Harvey’s ailment Monday, said that he was concerned for Harvey’s overall health when he heard what was going on.

“A blood clot, yeah, that’s scary,” Collins said. “So yeah, I am relieved.”

Harvey was scratched from Tuesday’s Grapefruit League start on Monday after the diagnosis. The team had initially said the ace’s Opening Day start was in jeopardy.
