THERE may be 75,000 reasons for Humphrey Bogart not to run at Epsom next month but trainer Richard Hannon believes the lure of the Investec Derby may prove strong enough for Saturday’s Lingfield Derby Trial winner to be supplemented for the Classic.

However, despite the likelihood of Humphrey Bogart being added to the field, Hannon feels it is unfair his owners Chelsea Thoroughbreds have to make the choice between paying the £75,000 late-entry fee or not running, and instead should have an automatic entry for the race having scored in a recognised Classic trial.

He said on Sunday: “We won’t make a final decision until nearer the time as he doesn’t have to be supplemented for the Derby until the Monday before the race. We’ve got three weeks to think about it but he’s shown he can go around the track, he gets a mile and a half and he’s improving.

“If you’re asking me now what I think might happen, I think they’d probably want to roll the dice as this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to have a runner in the Derby.”

Humphrey Bogart, like Hannon’s Dee Stakes winner Viren’s Army, is owned by a syndicate and the cost of adding the horse to the Derby is one of the main factors counting against him running.

Hannon feels this could be remedied by all Derby trials having a similar ‘win-and-you’re-in’ system that operates for the winner of the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom.

“If you win one of these races you should be able to get into the Derby itself,” the trainer said. “The money is the big thing we’re going to have to consider because £75,000 is a lot for these guys.

“If you have a horse who’s winning a Derby trial, surely you want them running in the Derby? It makes the Derby a better race. The whole point of running horses in the trials is to see whether they should go to the Derby.”

He added: “The Derby closes quite early and with a horse like him I started off the season thinking Humphrey Bogart was going to be a Guineas horse.

“For the ordinary people who own horses like him and Viren’s Army, it’s a lot of money to supplement. They should be able to spend the next three weeks dreaming about Epsom and getting really excited about the Derby because that’s what racing is all about.”
