IT MAY have been a winter of discontent for Goldream in Dubai, but last year’s King’s Stand and Abbaye winner is now “going like a rocket”, according to trainer Robert Cowell, and is set to be unleashed in Saturday’s Group 2 Temple Stakes.

The seven-year-old failed to take to life in Meydan, finishing seventh on his first start in a Group 3 before coming ninth behind Buffering in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night.

But since returning to Cowell’s base in Newmarket Goldream has bounced back to his best, and the trainer told At The Races on Monday: “Things didn’t really work out for him in Dubai and I don’t really know why. Now he’s back with a vengeance and he worked like an absolute beast the other day.

“Hopefully the ground will stay fast and we’ll be away to Haydock for the Temple Stakes which can serve as a prep for the King’s Stand. He’s going like a rocket and it’s all systems go as long as the ground stays fast.”

Mecca’s Angel could return in the race, while Profitable, winner of the Group 3 Palace House Stakes on 2,000 Guineas day is among 18 remaining entries.

Weather latest

The ground was described as good to firm at Haydock on Monday after a succession of dry days, but rain is forecast.

Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright said: “The weather is due to break on Tuesday with three millimetres of rain that day, plus Wednesday and Thursday, then five or six millimetres on Friday and Saturday.

“In that context it does not look likely that we will water and we will let events take their course.”

Entries elsewhere

Linguistic, still a possibility for the Investec Derby, has options this weekend with Goodwood’s Listed Casco EBF Stallions Cocked Hat Stakes on Friday and Saturday’s Fairway Stakes at Newmarket. Trainer John Gosden could also start Bahrain Trophy winner Mr Singh off for the season at Goodwood in Saturday’s Listed Tapster Stakes.

At York, All-weather finals day winner Moonrise Landing, unbeaten in her last five starts, could return to turf  for the Listed weddingmates.co.uk Grand Cup, with Quest For More among her possible opposition.
