Giants interview Steve Spagnuolo, Lions DC Teryl Austin

One defensive mind presided over one of the worst defenses in NFL history. Another was responsible for a surprisingly solid ‘D’ in Detroit.

Both got their shots to interview for the Giants’ vacant head coaching job on Thursday. Owner John Mara continued his “extensive” search to replace the departed Tom Coughlin by meeting with his own defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, in the morning, and later interviewing Teryl Austin, the defensive coordinator of the Lions for the last two years and a hot coaching candidate this offseason.

The Giants confirmed both interviews on their website. The club has now interviewed three candidates for the job; offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo was the first option interviewed on Tuesday.

Spagnuolo’s case for being Giants coach seems shaky after running a defense that surrendered a league-worst 6,725 total yards, the third-highest total of all time. His ‘D’ allowed 27.6 points per game (third-worst in the NFL), playing a critical role in the Giants’ in ability to close out games (and possibly in Coughlin’s demise).

But several Giants still believed the defensive coordinator could lead the franchise.

NEW NAMES RUMORED TO BE ON GIANTS’ HEAD COACHING LIST

Current defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo interviews to replace Tom Coughlin.

“Without a doubt!” said one player in a text message. “(He) possesses leadership qualities, can be hard-nosed, and he’s a players’ coach.”

Defensive tackle Barry Cofield, who played under Spagnuolo during the 2007 Super Bowl run and returned to the Giants late in 2015, pointed to personnel issues as the main thing hurting Spagnuolo’s ‘D this past season.

“I think he can get the job done with the right personnel,” Cofield said.

“I think he did the best he could with what he had,” Mara had said of Spagnuolo earlier in the week. “I want to hear from him what he felt about how we performed there, what improvements he would make going forward.”

Still, Spagnuolo’s recent resume seemed well behind that of Austin, who interviewed later in the day. Austin has already interviewed with the Browns and Dolphins, and he’s scheduled to meet with the Eagles in the coming days. Austin, who has never served as an NFL head coach, arrived with impressive credentials after piloting a Lions ‘D’ short on talent to 44 sacks one season after losing stud defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free agency.

If the Giants did choose to go with a defensive mind as their next head coach it would also open the door for them to retain McAdoo as offensive coordinator. The Giants’ next head man will be under no pressure to retain McAdoo, Mara has said, but Eli Manning spent the early part of this week backing his second-year offensive coordinator. If the Giants can keep McAdoo in East Rutherford, they’ll prevent Manning from learning a new offensive system for the third time in four seasons, and keep him with the coordinator who helped resuscitate his career following a 27-interception 2013 campaign.

There are no guarantees that the Giants will be able to do that, though; on Thursday, McAdoo was reportedly interviewing for the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching job.

The Giants search will continue as well: Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase is set to interview Friday, and Doug Marrone, a Jacksonville assistant, will interview Saturday. The club has also been linked to Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, although Carolina GM Dave Gettleman said Thursday that the Cleveland Browns are the only club that’s scheduled an interview with McDermott so far.

NOTES: Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross interviewed for the Tennessee Titans’ GM job on Thursday.
