Giants Insider: Taking 'extreme precaution' with Donnell

Larry Donnell has been on the injured reserve with a neck injury.

The once-bright future of Giants tight end Larry Donnell suddenly looks just a little bit cloudy.

Donnell, who landed on injured reserve with a neck injury in December, still hasn’t been cleared for a return to action, Giants general manager Jerry Reese said on Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. He’s expected to be cleared eventually, Reese said, but the GM stressed that the Giants are going to take things slowly with the veteran because of the nature of the injury.

“He’s coming back and hopefully he’ll be able to continue to play,” Reese said. “We’re expecting him to be back, but necks can be tricky, so we’ll have to wait and see where that goes . . . Hopefully he can get healthy and come back and continue his career.”

Reese said the Giants are proceeding with “extreme precaution,” painting a grim picture for Donnell’s future just two years after he finished second on the team with six TD catches. But a source told the News that Donnell’s neck injury is not a “career concern.”

The Giants are simply treating the situation with extra care, something they can afford to do thanks to the emergence of Will Tye, an undrafted free agent who finished fourth on the team with 42 catches last season. It also seems possible that Tye could supplant Donnell, who is a restricted free agent this offseason.

“He really did a nice job for us,” Reese said of Tye. “We expect him to continue to develop and grow and be a good piece for us at that position.”

The Giants’ offensive line remains a work in progress, set at left tackle (Ereck Flowers), center (Weston Richburg) and one other position (Justin Pugh), uncertain at two spots. Reese promised that the team will address that issue, although he did not rule out the possibility of in-house options emerging.

“We may have the starter on the team right now,” he said. “We’ll look for a good player in free agency in the offensive line, we’ll look for good players on the offensive line in the draft.”

The Giants do have veterans Marshall Newhouse and John Jerry under contract next season, although both were frequently ineffective in 2016. Seventh-round pick Bobby Hart could also be an option after seeing action at tackle. Reese also believes the line play will improve because Flowers, the Giants’ 2015 first-round selection, will take a step forward in his second season at left tackle.

“He was up and down a little bit during the season,” Reese said. “I think that rookie wall, I think he hit that at some point. But he’s a tough kid that stayed out there the whole time.”

Reese added that Pugh, who played guard last season after beginning his career as a tackle, will continue to be a “flexible” player, which should free the team to pursue a variety of options in free agency.

S Mykkele Thompson, who tore his Achilles in training camp, is “getting closer” to full health, Reese said . . . Reese did not rule out the possibility of using the Giants’ bounty of camp space – the club could have as much as $60 million to spend this offseason – to extend the contracts of several young building block players, such as Odell Beckham Jr. . . .
