Just as the Giants are bracing to lose the player who was once the defensive end of their dreams, the future defensive end of their dreams may have become available.

On Tuesday, as expected, the Giants did not place the $15.7 million franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul. Suddenly, JPP seems set to hit the free agent market next week. The Giants remain interested in retaining his services, and they met with his representatives last week at the NFL Scouting Combine, but the two sides have yet to find common ground. The Giants can still negotiate exclusively with Pierre-Paul through Sunday.

At the very least, it seems as if Pierre-Paul will have a chance to see what he’s worth on the open market when the “tampering” period opens on March 7, although he could wind up still returning to the GIants.

And the Giants may find themselves evaluating other, more enticing pass-rushing options. While GM Jerry Reese was busy setting the stage for Pierre-Paul to walk, the Miami Dolphins were placing the transition tag – and not the more expensive, more prohibitive franchise tag – on their finest defensive end, Olivier Vernon.

The transition tag, worth $12.7 million, allows the Dolphins to match any offer to Vernon, but if they choose not to, another team could sign Vernon without giving up draft pick compensation. So if Reese has interest in Vernon, 25, all he has to do is make Vernon an offer that Miami can’t – or won’t – match. Just a year ago, Miami applied the transition tag to tight end Charles Clay, then declined to match the Bills’ five-year, $38 million offer and watched him head for Buffalo.

Vernon immediately becomes one of the top defensive line options in a lean free agent class, and the Giants, coming off a second straight 6-10 season, are expected to be big spenders in this offseason. Reese has nearly $60 million in cap space, so if he wants Vernon, he could make the defensive end a sizable offer.

One way or another, the GM needs to find a way to revamp the Giants’ defensive line, which spearheaded a ‘D’ that managed an anemic 23 sacks last season. Pierre-Paul, playing with a giant club on the right hand that he severely damaged in a summer fireworks accident, managed just one of those sacks, contributing to a defensive line that struggled to generate quarterback pressure.

JPP insists he will be better next season, when he’s had more time to recover from the injury and learn how to utilize his mangled hand. But he remains an unknown quantity, and that could very well push the Giants, who have gambled and lost on injury-prone players such as linebacker Jon Beason and left tackle Will Beatty in recent years, to go in a different direction.

Vernon could be the Giants’ preferred direction. He’s coming off a season in which he racked up 7.5 sacks and developed into a solid all-around defender.
