Mike Smith (r.) will get a shot to talk to Giants about replacing Tom Coughlin on Monday.

Add a close friend of Tom Coughlin’s to the Giants’ list of potential options to replace him.

Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith will interview for the vacant Giants head job on Monday, according to a source. Smith will be the sixth candidate to interview for the position in co-owner John Mara’s “extensive” search for the franchise’s 17th head coach.

Smith, 56, has a good relationship with Coughlin, so much so that, a year ago, when the Giants parted ways with defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, some speculated that Coughlin might bring Smith on board. The Giants ultimately chose Steve Spagnuolo as their new defensive coordinator.

Smith brings with him a mixed bag of credentials after coaching the Falcons from 2008-2014. As a first-time head coach in 2008, he led Atlanta to the playoffs, and he made the postseason in four of his five years as head man. But he won just one postseason game in that span and he struggled to just 10 total victories in his final two years before being fired in 2014.

Smith was out of football last season. He also interviewed for the Miami Dolphins job, although that position went to former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase on Saturday.

The Giants have continued to cast a wide net in their quest to replace Coughlin after 12 seasons. On Saturday, the club interviewed ex-Bills coach Doug Marrone, who served as offensive line coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015.
