Prix Greffulhe (Group 2) 1m2f, 3yo

ROBIN OF NAVAN got the better of Cloth Of Stars on both occasions they clashed last season, including when providing trainer Harry Dunlop and rider Tony Piccone with their first taste of Group 1 glory in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud last November, and the old adversaries meet again in this afternoon’s Prix Greffulhe.

The son of American Post begins his Classic campaign on much quicker ground than he faced in the Criterium but Dunlop is hopeful that his stable star can launch a bold bid on his return to competitive action.

“He went away to Kempton for a racecourse gallop and Richard Kingscote was pleased with him,” said Dunlop. “I kept him going during the winter, so he should be straight enough for the job.”

Run under his belt

The Andre Fabre-trained Cloth Of Stars showed his wellbeing when scoring in the Group 3 Prix La Force at the track at the beginning of last month.

Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard said: “Cloth Of Stars has come on from his run in the Prix La Force and we expect him to run well. It will be difficult to turn the form around with Robin Of Navan but Cloth Of Stars has a run under his belt already this year, which should give him a little bit of an advantage.”

Fabre is doubly represented, as he also has the Coolmore-owned Le Juge in the line-up.

An €850,000 son of Dansili, Le Juge is seeking his first win on turf after twice scoring on Polytrack, but could be capable of progressing from his nose defeat of Zghorta Dance at Chantilly in March.

Apilobar has also progressed from the all-weather and, just as for his breakthrough Listed success here in March, will have the pacemaking assistance of Kidmenever.

Tight at the top

Robin Of Navan may have got the better of Cloth Of Stars on both occasions they clashed as two-year-olds but bookmakers are struggling to split the pair in the betting for the Prix Greffulhe.

Both horses are available at a top price of 6-4. Apilobar is next in the betting at 5-1.
