JOCKEY Danny Mullins will miss the Cheltenham Festival and will undergo surgery on Tuesday after it was confirmed he had fractured a kneecap in a fall on Saturday.

Mullins was riding Dicosimo for his uncle Willie Mullins when the horse fell at the fourth flight in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury.

The rider said on Monday: “The news I got this morning wasn’t what I wanted to hear. The knee is fractured and I have to have surgery in the morning.

“I’m going to miss Cheltenham – it would take a miracle for me to make it. While everything will depend on how well my recovery goes I hope to be back later in the season.”

He continued: “Missing Cheltenham is a blow. I hadn’t any guaranteed rides but with Willie going to have a lot of runners I’d have picked up a few.”

Mullins has ridden a personal-best of 28 winners in Ireland this season, notably Footpad, who landed the Grade 1 Gain Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown ten days ago. He rode a double on Black Hercules and Thomas Hobson at Warwick last month.
