The meeting at Fontwell on Sunday has been abandoned due to waterlogging as wind and rain sweeps in to disrupt British fixtures.

Following 35mm of rain earlier in the week on already saturated ground and more forecast, officials saw no merit in prolonging the inevitable and called the abandonment in advance of a planned 8am inspection.

Fontwell also lost last Sunday’s fixture and this latest abandonment is just the latest in a series of casualties from the recent wet weather. The upcoming jumps fixtures at Lingfield and Plumpton are also expected to be under threat.

The gale-force winds from storm Gertrude, which swept into Britain overnight affecting the north in particular, is also expected to have an effect on meetings.

Both Doncaster and Huntingdon are reporting strong winds ahead of their Friday cards. At Doncaster, the wind is set to be against the runners in the home straight, making for a testing finish even on ground described as good to soft, good in places.

Sedgefield, where they do not race until Sunday, are expecting winds of 60mph on Friday and 40mph on Saturday.
