Flames’ Dennis Wideman cross-checks linesman into boards

It’s not easy being a referee, that goes double in the NHL.

Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman delivered a vicious cross-check from behind to a linesman during the second period of their game against the Predators Wednesday night.

The linesman was blindsided, falling head-first into the boards, but no penalty was called, possibly because the official did not think it was intentional.

Moments before, Wideman was shaken up after taking a hit and was on his way back to the bench when the linesman skated backward, blocking his path to the bench.

It’s possible Wideman thought he was a Predators player or just did not see him until the last minute and reacted.

Whatever the case, Wideman could face disciplinary action if the league feels the hit was deliberate, which could result into a 10-game suspension.
