THE final two races on Cork’s Friday evening card were abandoned in the interests of safety after a delegation of riders and a number of trainers expressed their concerns about the condition of the track.

A number of horses were reported to have slipped in the mile maiden at 7.35, the first race of the evening on the round track. None came down, but with the horses parading for the following race, the stewards made the decision to call off the final two races.

Acting steward Shay Quinn commented: “A delegation of riders met with the stewards to express their concerns about the safety of the track, they felt that it had become greasy and slippy after an amount of rain.

“The stewards also met with the clerk of the course as well as a number of trainers and racecourse manager Andrew Hogan and in the interests of safety decided to abandon the remainder of the meeting.”

One of the trainers that went before the stewards, Johnny Levins, said: “If safety is a concern, the right thing has to be done and I imagine the right thing was done. Five horses slipped in five separate incidents and one nearly came down. If the boys riding don’t think its safe then the right thing has to be done and I feel it was the right thing.”

Rider Billy Lee said: “A few horses slipped and when they slip like that it’s unsafe.”
