Ivan Nova says the Yankees have seen enough of him to decide whether to make him a starter or not.

TAMPA – Ivan Nova’s quest to win the fifth spot in the rotation began in earnest Thursday as the righthander tossed two innings in the Yankees’ 13-4 loss to the Phillies at Steinbrenner Field.

Nova allowed one run on two hits, striking out one. He threw 20 of his 25 pitches for strikes.

“I thought he threw well,” manager Joe Girardi said. “He got a lot of ground balls, and that’s what you want to see, so, that means the sinker was working pretty good.”

Nova is trying to beat out frontrunner CC Sabathia for the No. 5 starter job, though the decision is out of the pitchers’ control. Nova, who is 22 months removed from Tommy John surgery, returned last June and went 6-11 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts.

“It wasn’t that my arm felt bad, but if you put in a year and a half or two years straight and at some point, you’re going to feel tired,” Nova said. “I didn’t feel anything like pain all last year, but on bullpen days and stuff like that, sometimes my arm felt tired.”

The arm feels better this spring than it did at any time last year, the lone exception being the day he first returned from the DL and threw 6.2 scoreless innings against the Phillies.

“I guess after you put that work after Tommy John surgery, after time you’re going to feel better and better and better,” Nova said. “I think that’s what happened right now.”

Although many believe Nova’s only shot at making the rotation is an injury to one of the other five, Girardi insists the righty is “very much in the starter mix.” Nova isn’t worried about proving himself to his long-time skipper, confident that if he pitches the way he knows he can, things will work out.

“This is my seventh year in the league, so they have seen enough,” Nova said. “I don’t worry about trying to impress my manager or pitching coach. I just have to concentrate and do my job.”
