England v Malta – How the players rated

[ad_1]

England

England dominated the match against Malta but could only score twice in interim manager Gareth Southgate’s first game in charge.

Southgate gave a debut to Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, while deploying captain Wayne Rooney in a midfield role.

Who impressed? Who struggled?

Joe Hart (goalkeeper) 6

Barely had anything to do apart from one late save from Andre Agius.

Kyle Walker (right-back) 5

Nothing to do defensively and wasted too many good crossing positions.

Gary Cahill (centre-back) 6

Almost a night off. Missed a first-half chance.

John Stones (centre-back) 7

Hardly tested but immaculate when required.

Ryan Bertrand (left-back) 5

Only lasted 18 minutes after suffering a hamstring injury.

Jordan Henderson (midfielder) 8

Been critical of him in the past but easily England’s best here. Busy and created opportunities.

Dele Alli (midfielder) 7

Industrious. Scored one goal, could have had others and missed badly near the end.

Wayne Rooney (midfielder) 5

Sat deep and sprayed passes around as well as having a couple of shots but not the driving force of old. Lucky to escape heavier sanction for a bad first-half challenge.

Theo Walcott (forward) 6

Worked hard with little end result. Missed a good second-half chance.

Jesse Lingard (forward) 7

Had a first-half header saved by Malta goalkeeper Andrew Hogg and almost set up a goal for Walcott in the second half. Decent debut.

Daniel Sturridge (forward) 7

Scored his first England goal for two years at Wembley and could have had others – a reminder of his class and threat.

Substitutes

Danny Rose (on for Bertrand, 18 minutes) 6

Decent performance as a substitute. Did his prospects no harm.

Marcus Rashford (on for Walcott, 67 minutes) 6

Clearly a big favourite with England’s fans. Lively and Alli should have scored from his perfect cross.

Jamie Vardy (on for Sturridge, 73 minutes) 5

Quiet – little impact.
