England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and chose to bowl first, expecting there to be some help for his seamers on a Bristol track that has spent time under covers in the approach to the match. Angelo Mathews said he would have liked to bowl first as well, for similar reasons.

As such, both sides swapped a spin option for a seam-bowling allrounder. Moeen Ali is replaced by Chris Jordan for England – Jordan playing his first match of the series, having been in good List A bowling form for Sussex.

For Sri Lanka, batting allrounder Dasun Shanaka comes back into the side, displacing offspinner Suraj Randiv in the XI. Mathews said he was unsure if his own hamstring had recovered sufficiently to allow him to bowl. It was also unclear if Dinesh Chandimal will resume keeping duties, but he will play as a specialist batsman.
