‘Two spinners against Pakistan is a bad idea’

England, unbeaten at Old Trafford since 2001, won the toss and chose to bat on a warm day in Manchester at the start of the second Investec Test against Pakistan.

The return of Ben Stokes and James Anderson was a fillip for England, as they sought to recover a 1-0 deficit in the series. Jake Ball and Steven Finn were omitted, having been cut from the squad on Thursday.

England also resisted the temptation to field Adil Rashid as a second spinner alongside Moeen Ali. Expectations on Moeen will be high – not just with the ball but also to address his shaky batting form.

“We have the chance to right a few wrongs,” said Alastair Cook, England’s captain, hopeful that Stokes would return with no residual niggles after his knee injury.

“Stokes is an allrounder which many sides in the world would like to have ,” Cook said. “He is such a dynamic cricketer.”

Misbah-ul-Haq shrugged off a lost toss. “Obviously we were planning to bat first but it just a matter of being disciplined and utilising the conditions in the first session,” he said. “The biggest challenge for us when playing away in unfamiliar conditions is that we keep our disciplines.”

They did that impressively at Lord’s. Unsurprisingly, they were unchanged.
