Eagles focusing more on Tom Coughlin as Giants hire McAdoo

The Eagles began circling around Tom Coughlin over the weekend.

The Giants chose Ben McAdoo over Tom Coughlin — and they may not have to look very far next season to see if they were right.

Just 10 days after stepping down as coach of the Giants, the 69-year-old Coughlin is apparently getting closer to becoming the next coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, according to multiple reports. The Eagles seem to have zeroed in on Coughlin since the moment they lost out on McAdoo to the Giants late Wednesday night.

Coughlin interviewed with the Eagles on Monday, one day before he interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers. And he absolutely intends on coaching next season, according to a source, even if it means staying in the NFC East and facing the Giants twice a year.

If that happens, of course, Coughlin and McAdoo would go head-to-head twice next season — and it’s a safe bet both those games would be tapped for national TV.

MYERS: TOM COUGHLIN WOULD BE PERFECT FIT FOR EAGLES, PHILLY

It wasn’t clear exactly how close the Eagles were to hiring Coughlin. According to ESPN, “there are issues for (the) two sides to work through.” But a source said Coughlin has already talked with Eagles management twice and might talk again on Thursday, which indicates things have hit a serious stage.

The idea that Coughlin will take his Super Bowl rings to Philly seemed unthinkable when this offseason began, even as he insisted at his farewell press conference that he was “not necessarily” done coaching. The Eagles’ search for a successor to Chip Kelly seemed to center on younger candidates, with many believing they were waiting for Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson to become available if McAdoo wasn’t their choice.

VACCHIANO: FOR GIANTS, MCADOO RIGHT MANN FOR JOB

But it appears McAdoo was their choice, according to a league source. And while it’s not known if they actually offered McAdoo their job, their intensified pursuit of him pushed the Giants to move quickly on Wednesday. Once McAdoo was out in Philly, it was assumed Pederson would be their guy. Now it’s looking like Coughlin instead.

It makes some sense, too, considering the future Hall of Fame coach has by far the best resume of any available coach on the market. And even though his Giants missed the playoffs the last four seasons and had losing records in each of the last three, his no-nonsense approach might make him the perfect man to restore order in the Eagles’ post-Kelly world.

Obviously coaching just down the New Jersey Turnpike from his old home isn’t an ideal situation for Coughlin, but he must have gotten past that for things to get this far. Besides, his only other option at the moment is in San Francisco, but it’s not clear if the 49ers intend to offer him their job.
