LAST year’s British Flat champions Silvestre de Sousa and Tom Marquand wasted little time showcasing their talents on foreign soil after producing early strikes on their overseas stints.

De Sousa, who was crowned champion jockey in October, has taken out a short-term licence to ride in Hong Kong for three weeks and claimed victory on Crimson Heart at Sha Tin on Saturday.

Champion apprentice Marquand’s feat was all the more impressive as he won on his first ride in Australia when steering home Tashbeeh at Caulfield.

Marquand, 17, is spending one month at the stables run by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and only touched down in the country on Thursday.

“It was fantastic, he travelled very well through the race and he picked up under pressure and made my job easy,” he said.

“I didn’t even expect to be riding this month so it’s brilliant to get the opportunity to ride a horse a like him in a race like that for connections like this.”

Tom Marquand: champion apprentice won on his first ride in Australia

The BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year nominee, who will be hoping to follow the successful exploits of Oisin Murphy and Kieran Shoemark in Australia, was keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite the dream start.

“As much as it’s the other side of the world, it’s similar to what we do every day at home,” he added. “You’ve got to treat it the same way – it’s a race, it’s your job and it’s what I came over here to do.

“As much as it’s brilliant to ride winners out here, I can’t be getting silly about it and trying to get on everything I can.”
