Derek Fisher fired as Knicks coach

Derek Fisher, who had said he wanted to restore the “championship DNA” to the Knicks franchise, was fired Monday, following the team’s ninth loss in its last 10 games.

The Knicks confirmed that Fisher had been let go and would be replaced by Kurt Rambis on an interim basis. ESPN first reported the news of Fisher’s ouster. 

The former Lakers guard was hand-picked by his former coach, Phil Jackson, to take over the team last season after Steve Kerr rebuffed Jackson’s offer to coach the team.

The Knicks, who haven’t won a title since the 1972-73 season, are 23-31 this season and 40-96 in his one-plus season at the helm. 

Following Sunday’s loss to the lottery-bound Nuggets, their fifth loss in a row, Fisher said he would take “some” responsibility for the team’s lack of preparedness.

Fisher took over for Mike Woodson, agreeing to a five-year deal to coach the Knicks in June 2014. He had no head coaching experience and followed the same path as Jason Kidd, who went right from playing to the bench last year.

The now-ex Knicks coach seemed like a good fit to work with Jackson, having played under the Knicks president in Los Angeles, where they won five titles together. Fisher also knew the triangle offense.

“I’d like to have a prior relationship with a coach so that we know that we’ve gone through some kind of issues together,” Jackson said in 2014. “We’ve dealt with some kind of battle situations. We’ve had conflicts, we’ve had disagreements and we know how to work things out. Those, I think, are part and parcel I think to having a relationship with people that can work together that can still disagree and come to terms.”

In October, Fisher made headlines when he got into an altercation with Matt Barnes in Los Angeles. Fisher was dating Barnes’ estranged wife, Gloria Govan, and the Grizzlies forward was infuriated to learn that his ex-teammate was in the house he once shared with her.

Fisher is the fifth coach fired this season, including Nets coach Lionel Hollins, Cavs coach David Blatt, Suns coach Jeff Hornacek and Rockets coach Kevin McHale.
