Rangers fans will love to know Denis Potvin has admitted that on Monday night in Vancouver, Potvin sucked.

Potvin, 62, the Hall of Famer and four-time Stanley Cup winning defenseman of the 1980s Islanders dynasty, crossed the line as the Florida Panthers’ color analyst during a wild ending to the Panthers’ 3-2 overtime loss to the host Canucks.

He called Vancouver forward Daniel Sedin a “lowlife” for taunting the Panthers’ bench after scoring the game-winning goal 2:21 into overtime.

“Look at that lowlife,” Potvin said on the FOX Sports Florida broadcast. “I can’t believe it.”

Then to top it off, Potvin made a bizarre comment about Vancouver’s Sedin twins, brothers Henrik and Daniel. Snide comments from Panthers enforcer Shawn Thornton and a punch from Canucks agitator Derek Dorsett into Florida’s bench had led to a near full-team brawl.

“Oh, my God. I see the Sedins are pointing fingers now,” Potvin said as players milled around and others tussled. “Well normally they only use those fingers to lick the peanut butter off of their bread. What are they doing pointing fingers?”

Only Potvin knows where he was going with that one. For his part, Potvin recognized this put him in a jam and issued an apology through the Panthers Wednesday:

“My choice words at the conclusion of the Vancouver game on Monday should have been more appropriate. In the passion of the moment and under the circumstances of how the game ended, they came out wrong. For that I’m going to extend my sincere apologies to Daniel Sedin, Trevor Linden and the Canucks organization.”

The Rangers (23-14-5, 51 points) visit the Islanders (23-15-5, 51 points) in Brooklyn for the second time this season, by the way, on Thursday night at Barclays Center.
