Darren Sharper could serve 20 years for multiple rapes

[ad_1]

Ex-NFL safety Darren Sharper will reportedly serve between 15 1/2 and 20 years in prison as part of a plea deal stemming from a series of rapes in multiple states.

U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo, who rejected a nine-year global plea agreement a month ago, accepted the new deal Tuesday in New Orleans’ federal court, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported. Sharper was accused of using Xanax, Valium and Ambien to drug is victims, and federal guidelines for drug conspiracy and distribution charges (which Sharper has admitted guilt for) suggest 188 to 235 months in prison; the new agreement falls within those constraints.

After his nine-year sentence from a global pela agreement was thrown out, Darren Sharper accepted a harsher deal Tuesday in New Orleans.

The government has no plans to make a recommendation on the length of time Sharper, 40, will serve, assistant U.S. Attorney Michael McMahon said, and the coverment might recommend a lenient sentence when Sharper is sentenced June 16. But Milazzo said Tuesday that the call will be hers in the end.

The government might suggest leniency because Sharper is cooperating in an upcoming trial against Brandon Licciardi and Erik Nunez, his alleged accomplices, who are set to go to trial on May 12 under Milazzo.

“Mr. Sharper has agreed to cooperate,” McMahon said, according to the Times-Picayune. “We may bring to the attention of the court his cooperation, if we deem that to be substantial. We are not bound to make such a notice to the court. That’s going to be within our discretion. No promises have been made, but the possibility is there.”

Milazzo stressed that the decision will be hers, however, and Sharper agreed, according to the Times-Picayune, responding “yes, ma’am.”

Sharper, who played for the Saints, Vikings and Packers, pled guilty or no contest to a series of charges, including drugging and sexually assaulting nine women in four states and raping three women in two separate incidents in New Orleans in 2013.
