WITH the Cheltenham Gold Cup and £1 million in his sights, jockey Paddy Brennan made his move on Cue Card nudging him up between Don Cossack and Djakadam. Then disaster.

For the first time in his career Cue Card fell leaving the climax of the Gold Cup to be fought out between two horses he may have been getting the better of when he made the mistake at the third-last fence.

Cue Card, who won the Betfair Chase and William Hill King George VI Chase to set up a crack at the bonus, has been in tremendous form this season and trainer Colin Tizzard is looking forward to seeing him back on the racecourse.

“He’s been in the form of his life this season and I’ve seen no change in that since his last run,” Tizzard said. “It’s another championship race and it’s another race that we want to win with him. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Schooled beautifully

Tizzard was phlegmatic after Cue Card’s Gold Cup loss, but it has not stopped him thinking what might have been. “I’ve thought a lot about it but he’s never fallen in a competitive race before. He schooled beautifully last week as well.

“We always know anything can happen in racing – Cheltenham showed that. What I want to happen is for him to have a clear round and for the best horse to win, and I really hope that is our horse.”

Cue Card heads the Betfred Bowl market at a top price of 5-4, while Gold Cup runner-up Djakadam is next in the betting at 5-2. Gold Cup third Don Poli also takes his chance and is a top price of 6-1.

Aintree going

The good places on the Mildmay course disappeared from the going description on Thursday morning after the course was hit by 2.5mm of overnight rain.

The official going on the Mildmay circuit is good to soft, while it is good to soft, soft in places on the National and hurdles courses.

Clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch, speaking on Thursday afternoon, said: “We had a mostly dry day with a very strong headwind following the overnight rain, until showers late this afternoon.

“There is likely to some more overnight rain, delivering three to four millimetres and then it could be dry into Friday but the occasional shower may pop up.
