Concussions are on the rise in the NFL.

In data released by the league, the 2015 season (including preseason games) saw 271 reported concussions, up from 206 in 2014.

This year’s figure was the highest total in the four years of data the league provided, and ended a three-year decline in concussions.

According to the report, there were 234 concussions suffered by players during preseason and regular season games. An additional 37 concussions were reported during practice.

The 182 reported concussions in regular season games is a shocking 58 percent increase over last year.

One year after the NFL hyped the decreasing numbers as a sign that players are changing the way they play football, they are now scrambling to deal with these numbers.

Jeff Miller, the NFL’s senior VP of health and safety policy, said Friday the league is trying to figure out why concussion numbers rose so much this season.

The majority of concussions in the regular season were a result of an impact by another helmet (92), the data shows. The playing surface accounted for 29 concussions, while shoulder to head hits caused 23.

The overall injury rate went down in 2015, as there were 6.6 injuries per game (in Sunday-Monday games) this season compared to 7.3 in 2014.
