American athletes concerned about the Zika virus should consider skipping the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro later this year, the United States Olympic Committee told its sports federations last month.

USOC officials and federation leaders discussed the rapid spread of the virus through the Americas in a conference call in late January, Reuters reported Monday.

USOC officials told federation leaders that athletes and staff members should avoid the Summer Olympics “if (athletes and staff) don’t feel comfortable going,” said Donald Anthony Jr., the president of U.S. Fencing.

PRESIDENT OBAMA REQUESTS $1.8 BILLION TO COMBAT ZIKA VIRUS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that the Zika virus is carried by mosquitoes, and that the most common symptoms of the virus are rashes, fever and conjunctivitis.

The Pan American Health Organization issued an alert about the virus last May, with the first confirmed infection in Brazil more than a year and a half before the Games are to begin. The CDC adds that since that first confirmation in Brazil, the outbreak of the virus has led to reports of severe birth defects among children born to mothers who have contracted the virus, including shrunken heads.

The CDC said Friday that the Zika virus can also be transmitted via sexual activity.

The Reuters report said that Alan Ashley, the USOC’s chief of sport performance, was the official who briefed the federation leaders last month.
