LEADING Champion Bumper hope Aspen Colorado did not do a Yanworth and massively enhance his Cheltenham Festival claims in his trial, but neither did he do an Ivanovich Gorbatov and blow his unbeaten record as he produced a workmanlike display to land his second bumper.

Despite giving weight away to all of his rivals, Aiden O’Brien’s four-year-old was expected to win convincingly at a prohibitive 2-7, though rider Sarah O’Brien had to revert to whip to secure proceedings, holding on grimly to deny Gordon Elliott’s debutant Brelade by half a length.

Bookmakers were neither shaken or stirred. Paddy Power remain 12-1 while Boylesports are still 8-1 about Aspen Colorado landing the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham in March.

The JP McManus-owned son of Galileo travelled well during the early stages and made his way to the front on the turn to the straight, though he was made to work hard to fend off the second favourite, who ran a likeable race on his first start.

‘I’d be very happy to go’

Joseph O’Brien, assistant trainer to father Aidan, said: “We’re very happy with him, he settled nicely and won well. He idled when he got to the front but we were delighted with that.”

“He will have the entry for Cheltenham and JP and Frank [Berry – racing manager] will decide next week.

“I’d be very happy to go – he’s a tough horse, he handles good ground and he has won both his starts to date but we’ll see what everyone thinks in the week.”

Other Festival clues

Earlier on the card, Henry De Bromhead’s Alisier D’Irlande produced a taking performance to dominate the 2m1f novice chase, though the Knockeen-based trainer ruled out a visit to Cheltenham for the six-year-old, who was prominent in the ante-post Arkle market.

Following the dominant display, De Bromhead tweeted: “Alisier D’Irlande continues to excite. His jumping has definitely improved for that better ground and we’ll more than likely look at Aintree next.”

Cheltenham Festival pointers were however provided in the preceding 2m2f Foxrock Cup Hurdle in which Great Field made a likeable debut for Willie Mullins and McManus to win hard held.

Barry Geraghty remained motionless throughout the event aboard the French recruit and soon put the race to bed once the field entered the straight, quickening clear before being eased down in the final 50 yards.

Sky Bet shortened Great Field to 10-1 (from 16) for both the County Hurdle and Coral Cup.
