PAUL NICHOLLS had a quiet December, but the team are back firing as Adrien Du Pont gave him a first Finale winner.

Sent off the 11-8 favourite, Adrien Du Pont was given a well-judged ride by Nick Scholfield as the pair wore down the front-running Chic Name to win by two and a quarter lengths.

Major Mac had taken the field along before Chic Name kicked on under Alain Cawley and when the pair entered the home straight they were well clear.

The move nearly paid off, as the field were well strung out, but Scholfield kept narrowing the gap without asking for maximum effort.

He timed his challenge nicely, as Adrien Du Pont jumped the last level with Chic Name, before going away on the run to the line.

Adrien Du Pont is a general 20-1 chance for the Triumph Hurdle, and Tom Jonason, assistant to Nicholls, said: “Adrien Du Pont had experience at the course and he is a big strong four-year-old so we hoped for the best even in the very testing ground.

“He is one of our more forward four-year-olds so he has put himself in the Triumph Hurdle picture.”

For Chic Name, the Cheltenham Festival is also the plan as owner and Arena Racing Company chairman David Thorpe said: “Going around the bend I thought we had a very good chance.

“He didn’t win but didn’t he do well? He is a lovely horse and will do really well next season but the Fred Winter is the plan now.”
