AN ALARMING drift on Albert Bartlett favourite Barters Hill on Thursday morning was downplayed by trainer Ben Pauling, but he did admit the six-year-old had pulled out stiff on Wednesday.

Having been a solid 5-2 shot for weeks, Barters Hill was very weak on the exchanges in the minutes leading up to declaration time, prompting worries he would not be among the final field.

He did feature in the 20 declared runners, though is now vying for favouritism with Shantou Village and is as big as 4-1.

Pauling said: “He pulled out stiff on Wednesday morning and wasn’t quite himself, but I had him checked out by the vet this morning and he’s sound as a pound and couldn’t have looked better.

“I couldn’t be happier with him, he’s fit and well and it’s all systems go.”

Barters Hill in unbeaten in four bumpers and three runs over hurdles, beating the likes of Bellshill, Buveur D’Air and Altior along the way.
