ANNIE POWER and Ruby Walsh will have the chance to erase the memories of last year’s Cheltenham Festival as they headline 13 runners for the first championship race of this year’s extravaganza, the Stan James Champion Hurdle.

Declarations for the Grade 1 were made on Sunday, and there were no defections leaving 13 runners to do battle.

Annie Power was supplemented by Willie Mullins for owners Susannah and Rich Ricci, following the injury to stablemate Faugheen. Arctic Fire, another Champion Hurdle contender for Mullins but in different ownership, was also injured in the run up to the race, which Faugheen won last year.

Annie Power had the OLBG.com Mares’ Hurdle at her mercy last season, but a last-flight fall cost her victory, and saved bookmakers an estimated £80 million payout following the earlier successes for Douvan, Faugheen and Un De Sceaux as Mullins dominated day one of the festival.

On her seasonal reappearance at Punchestown, Annie Power wore a hood, and she also works in one at home, but the headgear has not been declared for Tuesday.

With Walsh aboard Annie Power, Nichols Canyon will be partnered by Paul Townend, while David Mullins rides Sempre Medici.

Nicky Henderson has five in the race, with My Tent Or Yours set for his first start for 703 days. Daryl Jacob rides Top Notch, while Nico de Boinville is aboard Peace And Co.

Late decision for Old Guard

Old Guard’s participation in the race will hinge on a schooling session on Monday morning, as he was found to be “slightly stiff behind” for the second day running on Sunday.

Nicholls had described the five-year-old’s workout on Saturday as “dire”, and while he was better on Sunday, the Nicholls camp still have cause for concern.

Quoted in his Betfair blog, the trainer said on Sunday: “He worked much better this morning. But after he cooled off he was very slightly stiff behind.

“After speaking to his three owners earlier today I agreed that we will not be making a firm decision about his participation in the Champion Hurdle until he schools over eight flights of hurdles at home tomorrow morning.”

Mares’ Hurdle field

Annie Power’s absence in the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle has left Vroum Vroum Mag with the responsibility of landing the prize for the Mullins team, and she will take on 19 rivals in the race.

Gitane Du Berlais, Polly Peachum and The Govaness all feature among the opposition.
