The Canadiens see Twitter celebration turn into an embarrassing lesson on social media.

The Montreal Canadiens apparently couldn’t remember the past, so they were doomed to repeat it.

The NHL franchise ran a Twitter promotion thanking fans for helping the team reach one million Twitter followers by posting custom jerseys with followers’ Twitter handles on the back. The messages were automated, and just like the New England Patriots did back in November 2014, the Canadiens ended up posting tweets with Twitter handles encompassing hateful language, including the N-word.

Montreal was thanking the followers in both French and English: “Bienvenue dans la famille! / Welcome to the family!” One of the messages went to the Twitter handle “@IloveISIS.”

Late Wednesday night the Canadiens began deleting the offensive tweets and sent out an apology.

“Automated messages were sent from our account tonight resulting from a filtering issue in our campaign to thank our 1M Twitter followers,” the team wrote. “We apologize for the offensive messages and have fixed the issue so it won’t happen in the future.”
